Do you use write-the-room activities in your classroom? They are a great way to combine academics with movement! In my special education classroom, adding the movement allows my students to focus and attend to the task for extended periods. Therefore, I will try to add it to our schedule whenever possible!
What are write-the-room activities?
Write the Room activities are classroom resources that help students practice their writing, reading and problem-solving skills. It typically involves posting a series of words or short phrases around the room and having students walk around to find them, writing down each word or solving a problem. It’s like playing hide and seek with a word problem!
Are write-the-room activities only used in literacy block?
That’s the best part; they can be tailored to different grades and all subject areas! I love using them during literacy, math, science and social studies! It is a great way to practice a new skill or assess old ones. Check out some of my write-the-room activities here!
Are they only used in kindergarten?
No, You can use these activities across all primary grades! Adding movement is beneficial to all students, not just our younger ones. Although it mainly targets primary grades, my grade 4 students have done many of them during our math lessons and love it!
How to use write-the-room activities in your classroom
Firstly, I suggest printing the placement cards on cardstock to make them more sturdy. Place these cards around your classroom or school. Most importantly, you will provide each student with a clipboard with the appropriate worksheet.
I teach special education; therefore, the students range in my class from k-4. My write-the-room centers come with various worksheets to ensure you can find the perfect fit for each of your students!
Finally, your students will walk around the classroom/school and complete their worksheets! It is that simple! There is very little prep work for you and a lot of learning and excitement for your students!
